Biography of a Builder
Gary Poush

Gary Poush was 14 when he built his first project: a little house in the woods with three bunks and a fireplace, in northern Minnesota wilderness.

His family moved to Powell, Wyoming when he was a high school senior, and he has lived since in the Rockies and the Cascades.  He played basketball for the Wyoming Cowboys and studied medicine, science and photography, graduating with a B.A. in Zoology in 1970. During his college summers, he worked for his girlfriend's father in Minnesota, learning the basics of commercial and residential construction.  His interest in nature and science, and working with his hands, led him to building as a career.

Since, he has spent over 25 years as a carpenter, foreman, building superintendent and owner of Serra Construction, Inc. He's built a vast range of structures, from small houses to high-budget commercial projects, such as banks and malls.

Gary has extensive architectural knowledge from remodelling houses built in the last century, particularly during his years in Portland, Oregon, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. There, working with architects, he remodelled classic bungalows and helped design and build new homes, both in town and near the Columbia River and the Pacific.

Gary also worked as an architectural photographer, shooting for OTKM Construction, Jesuit High School, and Domaine Drouhin Winery, among others, in Oregon.

He's a landscape photographer as well, and has had shows throughout the West, as well as taught photography.

His love of the Rockies brought him back to the interior West, with his wife Sandy and two children, Julian, 16, and Lillian, 9. The family moved to Grand Junction five years ago and have just built, hands-on, their own home in the Redlands.
